Captain America and the Avengers

title

Captain America and the Avengers had always been an icon of Marvel Comics since its early days. This game is an attempt to bring the icon to life on the Super Nintendo. It excels in some areas, but falls short on others. The basic premise is still easy. You are Captain America (and a slew of Avengers) trying to stop Red Skull from blowing up the world (yep, typical day for the Marvel Comics heroes).

Graphics: 7/10

I suppose that when this game came out, the graphics on this game were top-notch? Even though that may be an argument, but most of the points are awarded for its overall "comic" look. The characters are done with the Marvel Comics exaggeration, the backgrounds are well drawn. The down side, however, is that the heroes look too small. The enemies are not easily distinguished unless they have a clear difference in height and/or texture.

Sound: 6/10

Bleh... pretty standard stuff. Coming-of-the-age hero music as you walk down the alley and out comes some enemies. So the captain throws his shield and ... you get the rest. While the music and sound don't really add to the game, but they really don't take anything away from it. Neither will they annoy you to the point where you turn your sound off. But they certainly aren't memorable.

Gameplay/Fun Factor 6.5/10

I suppose gamers enjoy a challenge. But this challenge is ridiculous. I played the game over 10 times just to be sure that I died so often was not because I suck. The truth was, no matter how good I got at the game, I still die relatively quickly. The only replay value of this game is because the game is so hard that it prevents you from getting to the next area. Hmm.... maybe the game makers need to watch out for the difficulty factor there! The cast of 4 characters each with their own unique moves are not really that impressive. Given to the super-shrank graphics as well as the low-sample sounds and music, one might think that the programmers could've used the spare memories to put in more characters from which to choose from, or at least program more trademark moves by each existing character. Overall this game gets pretty bland pretty fast.

Overall Score: 4.5/10
