Top Rare Games
« on: August 11, 2009, 02:59:17 am »
I make no attempt at assessing true rarity, as I feel it can be quite subjective.  There are a few truly uncommon games, and here they are:

  • Donkey Kong Country Competition Cart (sold only by mail order through Nintendo Power)
  • Star Fox Super Weekend (sold only by mail order through Nintendo Power)
  • Super Copa (only released in Latin America)
  • International Superstar Soccer (only released in Latin America)
  • International Superstar Soccer Deluxe (only released in Latin America)
  • Exertainment Mountain Bike Rally / Speed Racer (sold in limited amounts to owners of the Exertainment exercise bike)
  • Aero Fighters (limited release)

What? I didn't know "International Superstar Soccer" was so rare.
Ebay.de is flooded with it.
Is there a special version in Latin America?

Being in North America, I have that region in mind with my list.  Of course ISS is much more common in Japan and Europe, but the release in the Americas is very tough to find because it was released only in Latin America.  It may be the case that it is more common than we think, but the interactions between people who live there and people in the US and Canada is limited.

I am not the one who is after rare games for the sake of it being rare, and i dislike sport simulations in general.
So i'm willing to part with my copy of "Internation Superstar Soccer Deluxe" (pal) , if somebody would switch it for a decent game ...
I would be charging nothing, if you would in return send your game to me for free, so make your suggestions!

Some valuable and rare PAL games are

Final Fight 3
Mega Man X3 (maybe also X2)
Street Fighter Alpha 2
Castlevania: Vampire's Kiss (Dracula X)
Super Turrican 2
Terranigma

While these are certainly not as rare as, say DKC competition cartridge, they are very sought after and very pricey.
I usually don't collect games just for their rarity, I also want them to be great (that's why I'm prolly never going to waste my money
on the Exertainment Bike / Speed Racer combo, since I simply don't think it's worth it)

Well, I can give some information about ISSS and Super Copa in Argentina and Uruguay. While Super Copa is pretty uncommon to find it CIB (it seems there weren't many copies back in the SNES days), ISSS, on the other hand, is one of those uber classics that happen to pop up here and there all the time. Not cheap of course. ISSS is considered the ultimate SNES' sports game and everyone wants it. I'm afraid to say they are goddamn right. That game is glorious not just for soccer fans, but for anyone that understands soccer rules and dynamics (or Captain Tsubasa's fans, as myself).

Apart from that, Super Copa is not a good soccer game. Bah, which soccer game could be good after playing ISSS? I guess that made a big part on Super Copa's rareness: nobody gave a damn about it, as they were too busy playing ISSS until the sequel came out on PSX and N64.

I have Spanish Super Copa's box anyway (as well as ISSS CIB), and I'd gladly take some pictures if you want.

What I find weird is that it looks like the FE Thracia 776 deluxe box set included a Nintendo Power (FlashROM) copy of the game.
Wouldn't it make more sense for the deluxe pack to spring for a MaskROM version? :P

Wasn't there a S.C.A.T. Combat simulator that's also one of the rarest?
Finding debug menus, etc in SNES and GB games.

It's M.A.C.S. and it was made exclusively for use as a US military training tool.
(SCAT was an NES shooter)

Believe or not, one of the rarest PAL games ever is Whirlo... it was only released in Spain (with box and instructions in spanish), and it was also released later in Italy, with the same spanish box and instructions, but added an extra booklet in italian.

People pay as high as 300 for it, but don't think the game worths it...

For actual play value, no game is worth that much. :(
Not sure how much text is actually in it, I hope it's worth about the $10 I paid for a Japanese CIB. :)
